Playlist: Wipers Classics

A power trio from the Pacific Northwest, with a guy playing a left-handed SG, writing depressing songs with non-standard, quasi-classical chord changes and rocking ferociously. Without the Wipers, there would have been no Nirvana. Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love both acknowledged the debt by covering them on a long-ago tribute album. They even offered The Wipers a slot opening for Nirvana on tour, but leader Greg Sage was determined to never do anything that smacked of self-promotion, and so they’ve largely fallen into obscurity. They deserved better, but they didn’t want it.
